Where to Savor Sensational Sandwiches on Tybee

August will soon give way to September, but before the month ends, we have to acknowledge an underrated observance that this month brings. August is National Sandwich Month, a special time of the year to celebrate the best bites between bread. If you love a good handheld meal, you’ll be delighted to discover a wide array of unique and tasty sandwiches to enjoy on Tybee. Though August is coming to an end, you can enjoy satiating sandwiches on the island on any given day. So head to these local establishments to savor a sensational sandwich on the island.

Fannies on the Beach

Fannies is an island staple that is known for their lively atmosphere and appetizing menu, which is as diverse and delicious as you can imagine. In addition to stellar seafood and gourmet pizzas, Fannies boasts several mouthwatering sandwiches, which patrons can find in the “Between the Buns” section of their vibrant menu. From burgers and po’boys to sliders and clubs, there’s something for everyone when it comes to handheld options here. Their blackened mahi sandwich is a popular option, as is their fabulous shrimp burger. The avocado chicken club doesn’t disappoint and neither does their “Beyond” burger for plant-based palates. All sandwiches here come with your choice of fries or slaw, and you can substitute onion rings or chili cheese fries for just a few dollars more.

AJ's Dockside

A-J’s Dockside

Patrons flock to A-J’s Dockside for their classic harbor fish house plates and their stellar sunset views from the dock. In addition to the fresh seafood entrees, A-J’s serves up several sandwiches that are worth dropping by for. A standout is their crab burger, which features five ounces of lovely lump crab meat served with a tangy remoulade on the side. They also offer a traditional beef burger as well as a veggie burger. The po’boys are another fan favorite, with your choice of fried oysters; fried flounder; fried, grilled, or blackened shrimp; or grilled or blackened mahi. Whatever you decide on, you’re sure to love the sandwiches at A-J’s.

The Deck

Another beloved island eatery, The Deck has a portion of their menu dedicated to heavenly handhelds that always deliver on deliciousness. Their deck burger features two grilled angus patties topped with cheese, chipotle mayo, rum bbq sauce and the traditional lettuce, tomato and onion combo. It’s a bold, beefy bite that you’ll love sinking your teeth into. They also offer a fried cobia burger and a blackened chicken burger for something a little lighter. Beyond burgers, The Deck has a BLTA that’s perfect for lunch on a sunny afternoon as well as a lauded shrimp and lobster roll when you want to put on the ritz.

Bubba Gumbo’s

One of our personal favorites for brunch, lunch and dinner is Bubba Gumbo’s. Incredible flavors abound in every corner of the menu here to include their tasty sandwiches. Here you’ll find three burgers made with Ga. Cattle Co. beef: the classic, the black & bleu and the smash burger. They also offer a dirty bird sandwich featuring golden fried chicken, mayo and pickles. For seafood lovers, the crab cake sandwich, fish sandwich and shrimp po’boy are sure to satisfy.

If you’re in pursuit of a burger that’s off the beaten path, you’ll find what you’re looking for at Rock House. Here they have more than 20 outstanding burgers that are as innovative as they are appetizing. Standouts include the teriyaki avocado bacon cheese burger, the Big Mike — two half pound patties topped with pepper jack cheese, bacon and a grilled Nathans hotdog — and the western burger, which comes with bacon, a fried onion ring and a tangy BBQ sauce, among several others. Beyond the burgers, Rock House also boasts a bevy of tasty sandwiches like their California chicken sandwich, the avocado BLT and the volcano chicken sandwich, for those who like it hot, of course.

Zunzibar

While this list is in no way comprehensive, no local sandwich list is complete without a reference to Zunzibar. Known for their award-winning sandwiches, this beach bar concept really knows how to deliver when it comes to between-bread bites. Their menu has global influences resulting in satiating sandwiches like the Johnny Chow, which features old town Indian curry chili; the Booty Roll, starring Boerewors sausage; and the Falafel Roll, featuring their signature Shit Yeah! sauce and more, which can be made vegan upon request. Here the sandwiches are hearty, so you may not be able to scarf the whole thing down in one setting. But the great thing about that is that you’ll have more for later!
