Where to Enjoy Bold Barbecue on Tybee

In addition to being the heart of summer, July happens to be National Grilling Month, which is apropos because barbecue is a staple of the season. That said, not everyone wants to spend time laboring under the sun over a hot grill this time of year. And if that’s the case for you, rest assured that you can savor all that smoky flavor at several of Tybee’s best restaurants. Though the island is largely lauded for its local seafood, a few Tybee chefs are firing up the grill to bring the heat to cuts of meat, boasting some of the best barbecue in the Coastal Empire. Here are our top recommendations for finger-lickin’ good barbecue on our beautiful barrier isle.

The Crab Shack

From the name alone, it’s safe to assume that The Crab Shack is a great option for fresh seafood, but what you may not know is that they’ve also got bold barbecue plates that are equally appetizing. On their sizable menu, you’ll find saucy St. Louis-Style Ribs, beef brisket and BBQ pork platters,  and their signature Peg Leg Chicken — all of which are served with sides of corn and coleslaw. And for a hearty handheld, the brisket or BBQ ‘Shackwiches’ don’t disappoint either.

Fannie’s On The Beach

Fan-favorite, Fannie’s has a couple barbecue options that are worth sinking your teeth into. Take their Baby Back Ribs, for one. It’s a whole rack of slow-cooked ribs brushed with SoCo BBQ sauce and served with fries and slaw. And that’s not all! Between the buns, they offer Carolina BBQ Sliders, which feature pulled pork tossed in a tangy Carolina barbecue sauce topped with coleslaw for a cool, crunchy bite.

The Deck Beachbar & Kitchen

The Deck is mostly known for their seafood staples, but their sweet, saucy Peach BBQ Ribs are well worth a mention on this list. Served with coleslaw, cornbread, corn on the cob and Texas Toast, the ribs are sticky and satisfying without being overly saccharine. The peaches bring a unique flavor to the ribs, making this plate more than deserving of a try.

North Beach Bar & Grill

Known for their Caribbean flair, North Beach Bar & Grill has a few barbecue dishes that deliver on deliciousness, like their Pulled Pork BBQ Sandwich, which is a Southern classic that pork-lovers rave about. Additionally, they recently added a half-pound Brisket Burger to their menu for carnivores who love a meaty meal, and what’s even better is that it features a new preparation daily. Just ask the server what they’re serving up today!
