Veg Out: Where to Find Vegan Food on Tybee

In case you didn’t know, November happens to be World Vegan Month. It’s a special observance in celebration of the global vegan movement. Even if you aren’t vegan, World Vegan Month presents a worthy opportunity to incorporate more plant-based dishes into your diet. And with the copious amounts of food that many will enjoy for Thanksgiving, eating vegan before the holiday can give your stomach some light and healthy love before you load it down with turkey and all the other traditional fixings. There are quite a few island eateries with delicious vegan options. Celebrate World Vegan Month Tybee-style by enjoying a plant-based meal at these local restaurants.

Sea Wolf Tybee

Known largely for their fine cocktails, fresh oysters and inventive hotdogs, Sea Wolf is also a popular dining destination for vegan foodies. They offer a rotating menu featuring several plant-based options that are so full of flavor, even carnivores love them. Whether you’re vegan for life, or vegan for the day, you’ll love the offerings at Sea Wolf. Their most recent menu features options like their Dips & Pickles smorgasbord, made with mushroom pate and a curry jackfruit spread; their brunch Tinga Taco, which combines Morningstar veggie crumbles with South-of-the-border spices and a cilantro aioli; and their signature Spinny Art Dip. Vegans will also be happy to know that most of Sea Wolf’s gourmet dogs can be made vegan with Beyond Sausage, packed full of plant-based power!

Raw Ingredients

Serving up sushi, sake, salads and bowls, Raw Ingredients is another great local option for palate-pleasing plant-based plates. Like the name suggests, simple and clean ingredients really shine here. You’ll find a sizable selection of vegan dishes, with something to satisfy even the strictest diets. Classic vegan rolls include their Veggie Roll, Sweet Potato Roll and the Ripe Roll, which is made with mango, pickled radish, cucumber and avocado. Their signature Honey Suckle Roll doesn’t disappoint either. Beyond sushi, vegans can relish their seaweed or ginger salads and tempura sweet potato. You can also build your own roll, burrito or bowl with tofu or sweet potato and your choice of veggies and vegan sauces.

North Beach Bar and Grill

North Beach Bar and Grill is a longtime staple of Tybee’s culinary scene. In addition to worldly flavors and fresh seafood, this beloved bar and grill serves up a number of vegan options to delight plant-based palates. Start with their chips & salsa or crispy fried plantains & salsa. Follow it up with their house salad, which is 100% animal product free, and finish off with their veggie sandwich, veggie tacos or the bountiful veggie plate. Vegans will be glad to know that all of their sides, which include sweet potato fries, brussel sprouts and red beans and rice, among others, are all plant-based.

Mi Vida

Sustainable ingredients in a zero-waste environment abound at Mi Vida, a beloved breakfast and lunch spot. Here, vegan options include their sensational smoothie bowls, which feature healthful ingredients like acai, dragonfruit and blue spirulina, among others, topped with superfoods like cacao nibs, goji berries and hemp seeds. Plant-based patrons can also enjoy Mi Vida’s Almond Toast, made with almond butter, banana, coconut and agave syrup, or their wildly popular Avocado Toast, featuring seasoned avocado mash, chili flakes, tomatoes, red onion and microgreens. Mi Vida also frequently offers vegan specials, so check them out on Facebook to see what’s cooking.

The Deck Beachbar and Kitchen

Tybee’s only oceanfront restaurant, The Deck offers a modest selection of plant-based options for hungry vegans, namely their T-Street Tacos with tempeh, red cabbage slaw, salsa verde, mango salsa and coconut rice — just hold the queso fresco — and their signature Tybee Salad made with mixed greens, tropical fruit, radish, pickled onions and a bright citrus vinaigrette.

Salt Island Fish and Beer

Though seafood is part of the namesake, Salt Island also serves up some plant-based options that are downright delicious. Try their Tempura Vegetables, which feature eggplant, green bean, sweet pepper and squash served with lemon aioli and their signature Salt Island sauce. Their Succotash is another vegan-friendly dish made with sea island red pea, green bean, swiss chard, corn and barbecue spice.
