Tybee Business Spotlight: Tybee Island Water Sports

An exciting new venture splashes on the scene this Memorial Day weekend

Locals and tourists alike are in for a real treat in the coming days because a new business is opening up soon, promising an exhilarating aquatic adventure for all. That business is Tybee Island Water Sports and they’re already making waves with their impressive fleet of watercraft. It’s a joint venture between a few veterans of the local water sports scene with owners being behind businesses like Savannah Harbor Cruises, Island Head on Hilton Head and Vagabond Cruise. The owners — Captain Keith Walston, Michael and Taylor Withrow, and Danny Pegg — have more than 30 years of combined experience in the water sports industry between them. And they’re bringing that wealth of knowledge and experience to Tybee with this exciting new launch.

“All of us have been in the water sports and tourism industry for well over 15 years each, and we’ve had businesses between Hilton Head Island and on River Street in Savannah, Georgia. Then we had this opportunity to open the water sports business here in Tybee Island, so it fits in with everything that we’ve done in all of our years here in the Lowcountry,” said Pegg.

With plans to open Memorial Day weekend, Tybee Island Water Sports will offer jet ski and pontoon boat rentals that’ll help thrill seekers splash into summer. In addition to the rentals, they’ve also got a 16-passenger tiki boat that’s arriving soon and will provide sightseeing and dolphin tours. Patrons will soon be able to book the Tybee Island Tiki Adventure, which is a 90-minute cruise complete with dolphin sightings and scenic views and fascinating fun facts shared by the knowledgeable captain.

“The tiki tour is . . . fun and family-oriented. That’s how all of our businesses are. So it’s going to be a family-friendly cruise, and we’re going to sell public trips for it. You’ve got your captain who’s going to be your guide out on the tours. And . . . we’re going to have set paths [to see] the dolphins. We’ll have music aboard the boat, just a fun vibe out on the water experiencing Lazaretto Creek and heading out by the fort,” said Pegg.

They also plan to offer private charters with customized cruises for clients interested in a more unique experience.

“I anticipate a lot of the families that are booking the big houses here on Tybee coming out and joining us for private excursions. A lot of bachelorette and bachelor parties coming in from Savannah. I know we get a lot of that here on Tybee,” he said. “It’s great because we’ve got an awesome relationship with the restaurants here for any food and beverage add-ons that people want to have. . . It’s a great pairing, having that boat and food option.”

The finishing touches on the tiki boat will be completed soon, with the owners anticipating it being ready come the first week of June. In the meantime all of the jet skis are ready and raring to go.

“I don’t think I’ve ever seen an unhappy person ride a jet ski,” Pegg laughed.

He encourages the public to book with them because it’s a fun time on the water. The owners take particular pride in the safety measures they’ve put in place to mitigate risks.

“Safety is one of our biggest concerns,” said Pegg. “Getting out on the water, we’re making sure that all of our guests are going out and getting properly trained on our watercraft and rentals, and that they are going out and understanding how the jet skis operate and how the pontoon boat operates, so they can . . . have a safe and fun time on the water.”

The Tybee Island Water Sports team is eager to launch and provide wet and wild fun in the sun to locals and vacationers this summer and beyond.

“We’re just super excited about the opportunity to bring this to Tybee,” said Michael Withrow, one of the co-owners. “I think that there’s a little bit of a gap in the market. Tybee has so many great offerings with a lot of people, and having another offering on the water will enhance the overall vacation experience that Tybee is already doing a great job offering.”
