About TBA
In a master plan survey conducted by the City of Tybee in 1985, residents ranked beach erosion control and beautification of the island as top priorities. As a result, the Tybee Beautification Committee (TBA) was established in 1986. Over the years, TBA has evolved into an association and continues to play a critical role on the island.
Since its earliest days, TBA has strived to preserve and enhance the beauty of the island with a large focus on reducing litter. TBA has organized and sponsored cleanups on the beach and highways for over a decade including two Beach Sweeps and four Adopt-A-Highway cleanups. In 2003, TBA launched a major litter awareness campaign with the message focused on keeping litter, including cigarette butts off the beach.
TBA then focused on enforcement and encouraged Tybee City Council to amend the litter ordinance to include cigarette butts and to require people to secure their trash on the beach which they did! Recognizing that smokers need a place to discard cigarette butts, TBA worked to provide an alternative to littering including the installation of “Butt Stops,” special containers designed for cigarette disposal, along Tybee’s Pier and Paviliion. TBA also installed a number of litter bag stations along Tybee’s beaches to encourage people to keep Tybee tidy.
The restoration of the cemetery in Memorial Park was the major project tackled by TBA in 2004, raising over 38 thousand dollars used to erect a beautiful wrought iron fence, restore headstones, scan for graves and landscape the area. Working collaboratively with the Department of Public Works, TBA members work diligently to beautify the island including city partks, streets and buildings that are adorned with additional flower beds, new trash receptacles, palm trees and other native plantings.
Litter reduction efforts continue today with bi-annual Beach Sweeps that draw hundreds of volunteers and sponsors.
