See Spectacular Sculptures at SCAD Sand Arts Festival

The Savannah College of Art and Design’s annual Sand Arts Festival will soon splash onto South Beach. Taking place Friday, May 3 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., the SCAD Sand Arts Festival is a Tybee tradition beloved by locals and visitors alike. The Sand Arts Festival found its origins in the early ‘90s. What began originally as a field trip for their foundation studies students has grown to become the sensational competition that it is today. Now in 2024, the festival is bigger and better than ever.

From Friday morning into the early evening, SCAD students and alumni will overtake the beach by the iconic Pier and Pavilion, creating striking sand sculptures, castles and reliefs to compete for coveted cash prizes. In addition to the sand artworks, some participants will also create awe-inspiring kites, inflatables and flying creations to compete in the air category. There’s also a drawing competition for artists to capture dynamic scenes from the day.

In addition to the student and alumni artworks, Atlanta-based fine artist Thomas Jackson will enchant audiences with his fantastical fiber works. Crowds are always blown away by the talents of the SCAD community, and the festival is a special opportunity to witness the innovation, ingenuity, creativity and artistic skill of these gifted students.

Slap on some sunscreen, don your sunglasses, bring a beach towel and a buddy, and plan to spend a fun day in the sun marveling at the next-level sandcastles and sculptures that are sure to blow your mind. Beyond perusing the artworks, guests can also grab a drink from the Coca-Cola tent, beat the heat at Burke’s Cool-Down Station, and jam out to beachy tunes from SCAD Radio. There will also be information tents for members of the public interested in learning more about The University for Creative Careers.

The SCAD Sand Arts Festival is free and open to the public, so there’s no reason not to partake in this fun, family-friendly celebration of sun, sand, sea and SCAD! To learn more about this event, visit
