Reasons to Visit Tybee in Fall 2024

Tybee, the vibrant barrier island just 20 minutes from Savannah’s historic downtown, is known for its pristine beaches, charming shops and tight-knit community. And if you’ve yet to discover this coastal gem, fall presents the perfect opportunity to visit Tybee this year. Like most island communities, spring and summer are peak seasons on Tybee, attracting vacationers from all over the world in pursuit of sand, sun, sea and Southern hospitality. During the busy season, the island is teeming with tourists and all sorts of activity. While summer on Tybee is certainly special, the fall is also a great time to visit the island. Here’s why:

Less Crowds

With the end of summer, children return back to school and families resume their normal routine. Naturally, the hordes of people who vacation on Tybee during the summer return back to their homes, leaving the island less crowded by fall. If you visit during the off-season, you’re more likely to enjoy an authentic Tybee experience informed by the locals who live here. During the fall, there’s more space and opportunity to take in the island vibe. Peruse our colorful coastal shops. Ask a local for their favorite restaurant or watering hole. Take a tour of the island without the awkward company of several strangers. This is the perfect time of year to enjoy everything the island has to offer while skipping out on summer crowds.

Off-Season Deals

Because the summer crowds dissipate by fall, the off-season on Tybee usually comes with great deals on hotel rooms and vacation rentals. Several hospitality businesses on Tybee offer discounted rates during the fall and winter. Take advantage of these deals to enjoy the island for less than what you would pay during peak season. Check out our specials page to see what promotions local businesses are currently offering.

Temperate Weather

One of the great things about life in the Coastal Empire is that the region experiences mild winters. This means that bright, sunny days continue well into the fall, and sometimes beyond that — temperatures in the 80s in December aren’t necessarily an anomaly here. Because of the warm and relatively consistent weather Tybee enjoys year-round, the fall is really just as good a time to visit the island as the summer. There aren’t too many other places in the U.S. where you can enjoy a sunshine-filled beach day in mid-October. All the more reason to make your way here in autumn this year.

A pirate-themed parade proceeds down a street lined with spectators. Participants brandish black flags with skull and crossbones, while onlookers watch and take photos. Palm trees and buildings are visible.

Events

Saving the best for last, Tybee’s fabulous fall festivities are probably the most compelling reasons to visit the island this time of year. Life on Tybee is always a party, and this is especially true during the fall. There’s a whole slate of fun festivals and events coming up in the coming weeks and months, including the inaugural PooGrass Festival, the Tybee Post Music Festival and the always-anticipated Tybee Pirate Festival, among several others. From Halloween to the holiday season, you’ll discover so much fun to be had on Tybee in the fall.  See all Tybee Island Events.
