Let the Good Times Roll: Mardi Gras on Tybee Island

Bring on the beads because Mardi Gras is just around the corner. Fat Tuesday is slated for the thirteenth, and Tybee Island will kick off the Mardi Gras celebration on Saturday, February 10th. Our islanders are a lively bunch, and we love a good reason to party. Between our warm winter weather, beautiful beach setting and fun-loving community, Savannah’s Beach is an excellent venue for this indulgent carnival.  Don your most flamboyant costume, put on your feathered mask and get ready to experience Tybee’s take on this NOLA tradition.

Vibrant purple, green and gold flags will announce the onset of the Mardi Gras celebration throughout the island. Festivities will take place from 12 – 6 p.m., and participants can purchase official Mardi Gras Tybee T-shirts around town to get in the spirit. Duly, the celebration is going to start with a stellar street party featuring energetic mixes from DJ Arte. This is a great time to shake off any stress and get down with Tybee locals.

After the party, get ready for the parade, which will start at 2 pm. Tybee is known for throwing some of the best parades in the Lowcountry, and the annual Mardi Gras parade is no exception. Bedazzled floats and colorful krewes will coast through the streets from city hall to the Tybrisa roundabout. Expect bountiful beads and other tossed trinkets to rain on the revelers.

The Christy Alan Band will follow up the parade to keep the good times rolling. This local favorite definitely knows how to deliver a good time. Their street concert will kick off at 3 pm.  After the set, look forward to a spectacular costume contest at 4 pm. With six categories including pets, prince, princess, king, queen and krewe, the Mardi Gras costume contest is always a crowd-favorite. The best in each category will receive a special gift bag featuring goods from local businesses, and the 2018 Mardi Gras Tybee King and Queen will be crowned thereafter. The reigning pair will then lead the crowd in the culminating street party, which will last until 6 p.m.

Don’t miss out on this festive opportunity to let your hair down while having loads of fun. This event, concert and all, is free and open to the public, so there’s no good reason not to come out if you’ll be in the area.
