It’s Green Season: St. Patrick’s Day Festivities Happening In and Around Town 

St. Patrick’s Day is Friday, March 17, which means that we are officially in the heart of green season, the time of fun festivities leading up to Paddy’s Day. In the Coastal Empire, St. Pat’s is a really big deal, with Savannah being home to one of the biggest parades in the country. As we gear up for the big day, there are all sorts of exciting events to take part in. And you don’t have to be Irish to join in on the fun. So, get in the green season spirit by enjoying these awesome upcoming events.  

Shamrock Shimmy at The Shoppes at 1207 

Tybee Island, or Tybee Ireland as it’s known during green season, is the place to be this time of year. Kick off your St. Pat’s celebration with the Shamrock Shimmy at The Shoppes at 1207. The good people of The Shoppes at 1207 invite the public to shop, stroll and be Irish during this fun pre-parade party, which will take place on March 10 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Enjoy Pot O’ Gold specials, festive treats and sips, music and more. Pie Society will be on the scene serving up tasty treats from the British Isles as well.  

Celtic Heritage Festival 

Taking place March 10 – 11 at Forsyth Park, the Celtic Heritage Festival is a cheerful celebration of Celtic community and culture. It all starts with the greening of the iconic fountain, which will be followed by a pipe drums procession, Irish dancers, a tug-o-war tournament and much more. There will also be live music both days from talented performers like Brigid’s Cross, the Chloe Agnew Band, Colin Farrell and Dave Curley, and the McLean Avenue Band.   

Irish Heritage Parade Day Scavenger Hunt 

The Tybee Island Marine Science Center is hosting a Rainbow Scavenger Hunt on March 11 from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., just before the parade. All are welcome to come out and test their luck in the pursuit of the elusive pot of gold. Lucky winners will receive fun goodies.

Tybee Island Irish Heritage Celebration Parade 

The 20th annual Tybee Island Irish Heritage Celebration Parade is set for March 11 from 3 to 5 p.m. Fun for the whole family, the parade will include lively music, spirited marchers and much more. The parade route begins at City Hall continuing down Butler Avenue to Tybrisa Street. Don your brightest green garb and prepare to have a fantastic time.  

Barabbas & The Tribe Junkanoo 

Our Bahamian brethren are making their long-awaited return to Tybee to perform in the Tybee Irish Heritage Celebration Parade and Savannah’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade. But the parades aren’t your only opportunity to see these spirited performers. Barabbas & The Tribe Junkanoo will perform twice daily at the Crab Shack between March 11 – 17. Enjoy sensational seafood and a stellar show you won’t soon forget.   

Shamrocks and Shenanigans 

Savannah’s entertainment district, Plant Riverside District is hosting their Shamrocks and Shenanigans Celebration from March 11 – 19 in honor of St. Patrick’s Day. Attendees can enjoy free live music on the riverfront from more than 30 bands, family-friendly activities, festive food and drinks and so much more. Lucky the Leprechaun will also be present for pictures. All events are open to the public. Highlights include the Shamrock the Riverwalk Lighting Ceremony, Celtic Tenors at District Live, Shamrocks and Shenanigans Party at Electric Moon Sky Lounge, and St. Patrick’s Cookie Decorating.  

Celtic Cross Ceremony 

Since 1986, Savannah has continued the tradition of its Celtic Cross Ceremony, an event that pays tribute to the city’s first St. Patrick’s Day celebrations nearly 200 years ago. This year, the ceremony will take place on March 12 at 2 p.m. at Emmet Park, which is where the city’s Celtic Cross stands.  

Green Road with Clodagh Kinsella 

Georgia Southern’s Armstrong Campus is hosting a night of lively Irish music from five-man Irish band Green Road. The gifted performers will also be joined by special guest and award-winning soprano, Clodagh Kinsella. The concert will take place at the university’s Fine Arts Auditorium on Wednesday, March 15 at 7 p.m. Ticket proceeds will benefit the Hibernian Society of Savannah Scholarship in Irish Studies.

Savannah St. Patrick’s Day Parade 

The St. Patrick’s Day Parade is the culminating event of green season in Savannah. It kicks off on Friday, March 17 at 10:15 a.m. Watch in amazement as Savannah’s picturesque historic district is filled with festive floats, decked-out cars and showstopping bands and performers. The Savannah parade has a proud reputation as one of the oldest and largest St. Paddy’s parades in the U.S. It’s a time-honored tradition that you won’t want to miss.  

Bohemian Hotel St. Patrick’s Weekend Parties 

The Bohemian Hotel Savannah Riverfront will host two lively St. Patrick’s Day weekend celebrations at Rocks on the Roof and Rocks on the River between March 17 – 19. Enjoy a live DJ and live bands to keep the party going all weekend long. There will also be Irish-themed food and drink specials. These events are free and open to the public.
