For many years, the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology has explored the rivers and coastline of South Carolina, uncovering evidence of early colonial ventures, shipping activity, naval conflicts, and other stories hidden underwaters, one of the Institute’s most ambitious ongoing efforts is the search for the Capitana–the lost flagship of the 1526 expedition led by Spanish explorer Lucas Vázquex de Ayllón, one of the earliest attempts to establish an European colony in North America. This illustrated presentation will highlight the Institute’s continuing work to locate this early 16th-century shipwreck and other maritime losses detected during this project.
