The New Year is almost here, which means the return of a beloved Tybee tradition is on its way. For years, thousands have flocked to the island’s South Beach shores on Jan. 1 for the Tybee Polar Plunge. This fun event is a great way to kick off the New Year with energy and excitement as you join a multitude of thrill seekers in plunging into the brisk waters of the Atlantic Ocean. The Polar Plunge takes place on New Year’s Day at noon, but the fun starts before then with the Gang of Goofs parade and costume contest.

At 11 a.m., the Gang of Goofs parade will begin at the base of Tybee’s pier. Groups of three or more will show off their craziest, wackiest and most creative costumes to compete for cash prizes and the coveted Le Gang of Goofs trophy. An esteemed panel of judges will decide on the winning team, which will be announced prior to the Polar Plunge. Registration is required to participate in the costume contest. Each individual team member must register. Registration is $30-$35 for adults and $15 for children under 12 and includes the 2023 Tybee Polar Plunge long-sleeve t-shirt. Participants can register now online or in person at the event before 10:30 a.m. that day.

All proceeds will benefit the Tybee Post Theater and Tybee Island Main Street. The Gang of Goofs contest is a fun opportunity to start the year in a festive way while also giving back to the local community. To be clear, participation in the Polar Plunge is free and open to the public and registration is not required, but only registered participants will receive the t-shirt.

If you want to start your year with a splash, consider joining other brave souls in the 2023 Tybee Polar Plunge. It’s a fun time for the whole family that you won’t soon forget!
