The most important aspect of planning a trip other than deciding where you’ll go is deciding where you’ll stay. And if you’re planning an island getaway to Tybee, there’s one vacation rental company that is a cut above the rest. 

For nearly three decades, Oceanfront Cottage Rentals has been Tybee’s premier property rental company, delighting snowbirds and summer vacationers alike with their opulent interiors, high-end amenities, breathtaking vistas, and excellent customer service. The company found its genesis in 1997 when owner Stacye Jarrell acquired three properties after a divorce, which she began renting out long before rental properties became a business model. 

“I was usually renting to friends and family,” said Jarrell. “But I was very fortunate to meet a man from Gulfstream, and he helped me. He would have engineers who would come in on contract, and they would stay a month or two or a couple of weeks to six months.”

These engineers would stay at her properties, “and before I knew it, I was in the short-term vacation rental business,” she explained, adding that there wasn’t some “magic plan” behind her business.

“I had mortgages and I was a single woman looking to work,” Jarrell said. 

The business found its namesake in one of her properties, which was an oceanfront cottage. With the assistance of local marketer Paul DeVivo, who helped Jarrell settle on the nomenclature, and his wife, who designed their logo, Oceanfront Cottage Rentals was officially in operation. 

Prior to the internet boom, Jarrell advertised primarily in the yellow pages and in newspapers, including the Chicago Tribune to reach the Midwestern market, many of whom would vacation down South. Beyond her advertising efforts, Jarrell said the business grew organically over the years.

“People would see that I was working in my yard or on my house — I had a vacuum cleaner in the back of my Jaguar. I was the housekeeper and the booking agent working out of a notebook,” she laughed. “I finally decided I needed a housekeeper, and after that, things really started happening. I went from three houses to 32 in about two years.”

Today, Oceanfront Cottage Rentals offers more than 60 stunning properties that stand out for their luxury. 

“When I started my business, I wanted my guests to vacation like I vacationed — because I vacationed well,” she said. “We started to offer things that Tybee didn’t have in the ‘90s: hot tubs, really pristine rooms, nice linens and beddings — all the amenities you would want if you rented a home.”

Many of their homes also boast private pools as well as elevators to accommodate guests with mobility issues. Jarrell takes pride in the “over-the-top beauty” of her properties and the stellar service that she and her staff offer. Guests can rest assured that maintenance issues and other concerns will be addressed promptly as the main office and all service staff are located on the island.  

Some of her most sought-after properties include Heaven by the Sea, Casa Verde, Tybee Oasis and Tybee Estates, all of which are well suited for multigenerational family vacations, which is the business’ specialty.

Through the years, Oceanfront Cottage Rentals has elevated the property rental experience on Tybee and maintained a standard of excellence that won the enterprise the title of Small Business of the Year from the Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce in 2012.

“We’re the only business on Tybee that has ever won that award,” said Jarrell. 

Oceanfront Cottage Rentals remains the longest-running locally owned vacation rental business on the island. Jarrell regards her connection to the Tybee community as an essential part of her business’ success. 

“I think that, as a business owner, you’re obligated to give back. . . We do donations for Wag-O-Ween. We do discounts for the military and for our nurses, teachers and police officers. Whenever the police department needs housing, we donate housing for them. We always do that,” she explained.
